What Does ‘Discovery’ Mean? We were asked to think about what discovery means to us in the Discovery Lab. Discovery means to me to find something new. Finding is digging in the dirt like archaeologist do. In my picture, I am an archaeologist finding treasures from medieval times. After all that work I found all of that good looking treasure under the hot sun. That is what discovery means to me.

Crusie Arcade Game - Spaceman vs. Alien:

What Makes an Effective Professional Arcade Game? I am researching a game called Sphere Runner. The name of the creator is David Carachelo. The rules of the game are as follows: move Sphere Runner, it looks like a spacecraft, with the arrow keys to drive over the circles to drop the spheres. Try to avoid being hit by the submarines that will try to shoot the spacecraft. Try to get all of the spheres filled in before the submarines shoot you. Use the arrow keys to move the ship up, down, left, and right. When you use the arrow keys it will move Sphere Runner. The rules of the game are displayed under the game window. I would rate this game as a 4 in a 1 – 4 rating system. You win the game by filling in all of the bubbles without getting hit by the submarines. If you win the game you will move on to the next level. If you finished all of the levels it will want your name. Then, you start all over again.
To build this game I think I would need lot of cardboard, glue, cardboard cutter, string, rules, spheres, space crafts, arrow keys, scissors, little lighters for shooters, graphing - paper, and tape. To build the game it would cost $1000. I think it costs this much because the game would need a lot of work because it will be a 3-D game. I would buy it for probably $150.
The name of the game is Sphere Runner. If you would like to play the game this is the URL address:
Design Brief What is the Concept Design of My Crusie Arcade Game? We are building an arcade game called Spaceman vs. Alien. You play the game with a partner. The objective of the game is you need to push the opponent back in to a bell. The rules of the game will be displayed on each player’s side. We think that this game’s level of difficulty is 3 out of 1-4. You win the game by pushing the opponent’s character into a bell, then the bell will ring, and that will show you win. You will win the game and be given 5 tickets. If you have 5 tickets you can get a small prize. If you have more than 10 tickets you can get a big prize.
Our blueprint shows a good look at what our game looks like. The blueprint shows the characters on each side of the box, and our game takes place on the moon. There is a slot in the middle of the box where you can push the characters back and forward. There is a bell located on each side of the box.
A few materials that are going to be in our game are, cardboard, tape, bottle caps, foam balls, 3 bells, scissors, and a few prizes. We think that it would take at least 10 classes to build this game. Some problems that we foresee happening would be we lose parts, a part breaks off, and if a piece does not work. If anything does happen we would shut down the game until we fix it. If that does not happen we would not have to worry about anything. Create What are the Stages of the Building Process? Love the idea and characters. Question: Did you have fun making it? Was it hard? Polish: Make directions a bit clearer. Student Comment: Thank you for coming to test our game, Spaceman vs. Aliens. The characters were all Natty’s idea. No, it was not that hard to build the game. I had a blast designing and making the game with Natty. We redid our directions so they are clearer. Praise: This game was very creative and different than the others that I saw today.
Question: Since the game is based on strength, what would happen if some of the pieces broke in the middle of the game?
Polish: Make sure that you both know all of the rules and can easily explain them to someone who is playing your game. Keep it as simple as possible.
Student Comment: Thank you for the praise. I even think it is different from other games. We changed the rules to our game. We are not basing our game on strength. We have made sure that we know the rules. We are trying to keep the game simple.
Examiner: Mrs. Horst
Date: 1/31/13
Praise: Very impressive! I like how you used the pennies to balance the characters. I love how the tickets come out of the box. I like how your prizes are organized and liked the game
Question: Could you possibly move the bells closer together so the characters do not get stuck in the middle?
Polish: Maybe consider labeling the bells.
Student Comment: Thank you, my partner worked very hard to balance the characters in Spaceman vs. Alien. The tickets were not hard because we just needed to cut a slot in the box. I do not understand what you mean about the characters, but if we talk again you can explain it to me. That is a good idea to label the bells because someone might think it is something else.

Make It Better How Can We Make the Crusie Arcade Game Better? Reflection on Project
What can we do to improve our Arcade Creation?
Our game could be in size, bigger. Also we needed to simplify our directions.
Specifically, how would we do this?
We could take time in the morning or during recess to do this.
Reflection on Process
What did you learn to do with the Crusie Arcade Project?
I learned to build a steady game that would not fall.
What do you know now that you didn’t know before doing the Project?
I learned drawing blue - prints are harder than they look.
What can you do now that you couldn’t before doing this project?
I can now rip duct tape better so we were able to reinforce our game.
What did you like about the project that helped your learning?
I really loved the video, Caine’s Arcade, that inspired us to build the games.
What could have been done differently to help your learning?
We could have done our game surface a little bit bigger.
A Final Reflection:
When Natty and I started to draw our game, we thought up Spaceman vs. Aliens, we knew a lot of work was ahead of us. When we were in the middle of building I thought it could be improved. We enjoyed building and watching the students play the game. The big fixer-uppers we could have improved would be by the size of our game and the directions that we would mention to the kids playing before they play the game. We wanted to make sure the players understood the directions we had spent a while making for our game.
When we started to plan out our game we thought up a different version of Spaceman vs. Aliens. Then we finally changed the blueprint. First, we had to draw the game. Next, we started with the basic box, and after that had to make our characters. Later, we did directions, then did backgrounds. We finally did the touch ups. When we had the box finished we would take turns doing touch-ups every morning.
At first when we were finished the blueprint, I thought the rest would be absolutely easy, but I was wrong.
